Many times we get the question "Why did my bill jump from what I have always paid?" Here are some of the common
reasons: 1. Days of Service - Our billing period is typically between 28-33 days; if your bill is for a longer period, that may account for the difference. 2. Change in appliances - You may forget about the extra electric devices you purchased: computer, television, DVD player, deep freezer and outdoor lighting. These things do add up. View the household appliance consumption chart 3. Thermostat settings and outside temperature - Many times during hot or cold months, you unknowingly use more power because of your thermostat setting and the outside temperature. For example, if you leave your thermostat on 72 degrees during the summer, your air conditioner would run longer on days when the outside temperature is 95 degrees verses a day when the outside temperature is 83 degrees. So, your house is constantly being heated up by the outside temperature and your air conditioner is trying to maintain the inside temerature at the 72 degrees you set. On hotter days it might take hours to get to your desired temeperature. Plus, a change in time could mean more air conditioning or heat usage. Shorter days mean more time indoors (watching TV, eating in, etc.), and thus, more lights turned on.
